Dear Capital Area Community:

On behalf of Capital Area United Way (CAUW), we would like to express our sincere gratitude for all that you continue to do to make a significant difference in our community during these very difficult times and throughout the year. We are writing to you because of the leadership you have displayed in supporting United Way and its mission. We have a serious crisis or a tremendous opportunity, and we need your help and leadership.

Our capital city has approximately 200,000 new residents due to Hurricane Katrina; many of who will rely on the health and human services provided by CAUW member agencies. Along with the influx of new citizens, there has been a tremendous outpouring of support and relief donations. We applaud these efforts; however, there is a real risk that core funding to United Way member agencies will suffer as a result of the enormous generosity to the various national and other local relief efforts. In other words, individuals and organizations may be reducing their charitable donations to CAUW in order to fund Katrina relief efforts.

Capital Area United Way agencies were addressing the “every day” health and human service needs in our 10-parish area before the disaster of Katrina. Now, they are facing the challenge of the “increased” demands of an expanded population. These agencies will be here tomorrow; long after disaster workers and the national media leave our area. But we need your help to ensure that these agencies have the necessary resources to continue serving the daily needs of our community regardless of its ultimate population and size. This year’s Capital Area United Way campaign is more important that ever.

Please consider helping in this year’s campaign by:

  1. Ensuring your personal pledge to CAUW is “optimized”.

  2. Encouraging your business to make an additional “one-time” donation this year directly to CAUW.

  3. See if your family, friends, suppliers, co-workers, contractors, etc., understand the importance of supporting the vital human service needs provided by the agencies of Capital Area United Way and ask, “what can I do to help”.

Thank you for helping CAUW in its mission to “care for one another”. It truly matters now, more than ever.

Sincerely,
Kenneth L. Hinrichs
