Welcome to the Deep
South Center on Environmental Justice by
Lindsay Walker
Coming from Dillard University in New Orleans, the Deep South
Center on Environmental Justice will be relocating to the
Community Association for the Welfare of School Children
starting Dec. 1, 2005.
Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the DSCEJ was forced
to evacuate because of severe flood damage.
Currently, the DSCEJ has five of the eight employees
returning to work since the hurricanes. They look forward to a
more stationary location on the second floor of the CAWSC
building at 440 N. Foster Drive.
The DSCEJ began in 1992 within the southern region to bring
awareness to environmental justice issues. According to DSCEJ
Director Beverly Wright, the Center’s main goal is the
“development of minority leadership in the areas of
environmental, social, and economic justice along the
Mississippi River Chemical Corridor.”
